A passkey lets you sign in with your fingerprint, face, a PIN or a security key instead of typing your password. It takes a few seconds, and your password still works if you would rather use it.
- Open the sign-in page.
- Select Sign in with a passkey, the button under Sign in.
- Your device asks you to confirm: Windows Hello, your phone, or a security key with its PIN. Follow the prompt.
- You are signed in, and taken to the page you were heading for.
You do not need to type your user name.
The quick ways
- Passkey autofill: click the User name box and choose your passkey from the list that appears. No typing needed.
- Chrome and Edge: if you have visited before, the browser may offer your passkey as soon as the page opens. Confirm it on your device, or ignore it and sign in another way.
- Safari: you may need to tap the User name box or Sign in with a passkey first; it does not offer the passkey automatically.
- Your password always works, whatever the browser does.
If the prompt does not finish
You may see: "The passkey prompt was cancelled or timed out. You can try again, or use your password instead." Select Sign in with a passkey again, or sign in with your password as usual.
Good to know
- You need to add a passkey first. See Management Toolbox: Add, Name or Remove a Passkey.
- A passkey works only on the website where you added it. If you sign in to more than one site, add a passkey on each one.
- Lost your device? See Management Toolbox: Lost Your Device? Recovery Codes for Passkeys.
