Recovery codes are your way back in if your passkey device is lost or broken. Create them now, while you can, and keep them somewhere safe. Each code works one time.
Create recovery codes
- Open Preferences > Passkeys (see Management Toolbox: Add, Name or Remove a Passkey).
- In the Recovery codes card, select Create recovery codes. (If you already have codes the button says Create new codes: a window asks Create new recovery codes? and says your current codes will stop working. Select Create new codes to go ahead, or Keep my codes to leave them.)
- Ten codes appear, once. Select Copy codes or Download as a file and keep them somewhere only you can reach, like a password manager.
We email you "New recovery codes were created for your account". The codes are shown only this once: if you lose them, create new ones.
Sign in with a recovery code
- On the sign-in page, select Lost your device? Use a recovery code.
- Type your User name and one Recovery code (it looks like XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX).
- Select Sign in with recovery code.
- You land on the Your passkeys page. Add a passkey on your new device and create new recovery codes.
That code is now used up. We email you "A recovery code was used to sign in": if that was not you, contact support right away.
If you see "That user name and code don't match. Check them and try again.", check the user name and the code. After five wrong tries in 15 minutes, code entry for that account pauses for a while.
No recovery codes?
Your password still works: sign in with your user name and password and add a new passkey. If you cannot use your password either, see Management Toolbox: Reset Your Password, or contact support.
